Major administrative responsibilities: Program Director, Freeman Center for Endocrine Oncology, U of T, and heading an effort to develop a UHN/MSH Endocrine Oncology multidisciplinary program of excellence in patient care, teaching and research. I.G. Fantus, MD (Active Staff, Clinician Scientist job description [70% protected research time]). Major administrative responsibilities: Director, University of Toronto Division of Endocrinology. Director, Core Laboratory, Banting and Best Diabetes Center. Major research Interests: Investigation of the mechanism of insulin action with a focus on elucidating the pathophysiology of insulin resistance. Specifically, Dr. Fantus is studying cellular and molecular mechanisms of high glucose and free fatty acid-induced insulin resistance in adipose and muscle tissue. Secondly, Dr. Fantus has an interest in investigating the pathogenesis of chronic complications of Diabetes, particularly the ability of hyperglycemia to alter cell signaling.

Denice Feig, MD (Active Staff, Clinician Teacher job description [25% time protected for research]). Major administrative responsibilities: Head of the UHN/MSH Endocrinology of Pregnancy clinic and co-ordinator of the Masters course in Clinical Epidemiology called 'Evidence-based guidelines’. Dr. Feig teaches students and residents in three disciplines: endocrinology, internal medicine and obstetrics in the area of diabetes and other endocrine disorders in pregnancy. She also does clinical research in the area of Diabetes in Pregnancy and the effect of hyper and hypothyroidism in pregnancy on infants and newborns. She teaches seminars in Clinical Epidemiology and is involved in the development of evidence-based guidelines for preventive health.

Anthony Hanley, PhD (Staff Scientist with primary appointment to the UHN/MSH Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism. He is in the process of obtaining a cross appointment to the Department of Public Health, U of T [90% time protected for research]). Dr. Hanley is a new recruit to our Division, having started in January 2002. His major areas of research interest include the epidemiology of Type 2 diabetes mellitus associated complications, particularly among Aboriginal Canadians. In addition, he has an interest in the role of proinsulin in the etiology of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and in the validation and application of surrogate measures of insulin resistance and beta cell function.

Ravi Retnakaran, MD, MSc, FRCP(C) (Active Staff, Clinician Scientist) Major research interest: Dr. Retnakaran's research program focuses on novel risk factors for metabolic and cardiovascular disease, including adipokines, inflammatory proteins and markers of endothelial dysfunction. A major focus of this research initiative is the evaluation of these factors in women with a history of gestational diabetes, a population at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Paul Walfish, MD (Emeritus Professor). Dr. Walfish runs a very busy clinic specializing in the treatment of thyroid disorders and endocrine malignancy. His research into the regulation of thyroid hormone action by nuclear receptor co-activators is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

B. Zinman, MD (Active Staff, Clinician Scientist job description [70% protected research time]). Major administrative responsibilities: Director, Leadership Sinai Centre for Diabetes. Major Research Interests: Dr. Zinman has contributed significantly to the understanding of the relationship between metabolic control and the long-term complications of Diabetes. Dr. Zinman has been a principal investigator in a number of landmark clinical studies that have changed the practice of diabetes care. More recently his work with aboriginal people has highlighted the devastating impact of diabetes on Canadian First Nation populations.
