Women's College Campus

Catherine Kelly, MD, FRCPC is a Clinical Educator and an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto. She is the Division Director of Endocrinology at Women’s College Hospital. She is the former U of T Endocrine Postgraduate Program Director from 1999 to 2007.  She is the Peters Boyd Academy Director for the academic year 2009/2010 and is site director of the PB Academy at WCH since 2007. She is a faculty member of the Institute for Healthcare Communication and is the University DOM Champion for the Communicator role. Her clinical interest is in thyroid disease and she has created a Thyroid Cancer Program at WCH. She has won several teaching awards.

Sophie Jamal, MD, FRCPC is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and is the Director of Research for the Osteoporosis Program at Women’s College Hospital.  She is an endocrinologist and clinician scientist at Women’s College Research Institute who specializes in the treatment of metabolic bone diseases including osteoporosis.  She has a PhD in Clinical Epidemiology and is co-director of the Toronto Centre for the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study.  She is a member of Scientific Advisory Council for Osteoporosis Canada and a member of the editorial boards of Osteoporosis International and the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.  She conducts clinical research in 2 mains areas: the effects of organic nitrates on postmenopausal osteoporosis and studying the etiology and treatment of fractures among patients with impaired kidney function.

Rosario Briones-Urbina, MD, PhD, FRCPC is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. She is an active educator and currently represents WCH on the Endocrinology Residency Program Committee. She was the University of Toronto Division of Endocrinology representative on the Department of Medicine Continuing Education and Knowledge translation Committee from 2004 to 2009. She is currently the Chair of Medical Grand Rounds at WCH. She has done research on patient education in the field of diabetes. She is an active teacher in undergraduate and postgraduate education and has been the recipient of education awards. She has clinical interest in thyroid cancer, adrenal disease, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis. She is the WCH endocrine division lead for CE program development.

Sheila Laredo, MD, PhD, FRCPC is a Clinical Teacher and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto, in the Division of Endocrinology. She has a PhD in Clinical Epidemiology. Her clinical focus is in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), reproductive endocrinology, insulin resistance and lifestyle interventions. She is developing a clinical and research database in PCOS. She is a member of the Women’s College Hospital Research Ethics Board.  She is Medical Director of the Medical Clinics at Women’s College Hospital and has expertise in implementing ‘Lean Management’ processes into clinical settings. Dr. Laredo has expertise in the Health Advocacy role in working with different levels of government to help develop health policy, training initiatives, and clinical practice guidelines, with a special interest in autism. She is teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate medicine, has mentored students clinically and in research, and is the recipient of several teaching awards.

Lorraine Lipscombe, MD, FRCPC is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. She has a Master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology and is a Clinician Scientist at the Women’s College Research Institute and an Adjunct Scientist at the Institute for clinical Evaluative Sciences in Toronto. She holds a Clinician Scientist Award from the Canadian Diabetes Association/CIHR. Her research interest is in diabetes epidemiology and health services, with a specific focus on the association between breast cancer and diabetes and improving diabetes prevention in women with previous gestational diabetes. She is an active supervisor of many resident research projects. She is an excellent clinical teacher in the endocrine division at WCH.

Sandra Kim, MD, FRCPC is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. She is a Clinical Teacher and is active in both undergraduate and postgraduate education. She completed the Master Teacher Program with the U of T Department of Medicine and is the recipient of several teaching awards.  Her clinical interest is in diabetes and thyroid disorders in pregnancy, and osteoporosis.  She was the Medical Director of the Endocrine Obstetrics Program at WCH and will be the Medical Director of the Multidisciplinary Osteoporosis Program at WCH effective March 2010.

Afshan Zahedi MD, FRCPC is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. She joins the WCH Endocrine Division, effective July 1, 2010. She assumes the role of Medical Director of the Thyroid Cancer Program at WCH. She has ten years of clinical experience at the community hospital, The Scarborough Hospital, and established a regional thyroid cancer program. She was active in running a diabetes and pregnancy program and in establishing an insulin pump program. She has served on the Endocrinology Residency Program Committee since 2007 as the community endocrinology representative. She has expertise in advocacy, working with the LHIN to coordinate endocrine care and organizing the community hospital endocrinologists into an association to represent their interests to government.

Anne Kenshole MD, FRCPC, FACP is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto. She is retiring from WCH effective June 30, 2010. She has spent her career at WCH with a clinical and research focus on diabetes and pregnancy. Her major clinical interest is in type 1 diabetes. She was former Division Director at WCH until 2000. She is a well known undergraduate educator and has won several teaching awards throughout her career. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Tri-Hospital Diabetes Education Centre (TRIDEC) at WCH and served as its medical director for many years.

Taryn Becker, MD, FRCPC, MSc is a Clinical Associate in the Division of Endocrinology at WCH and a Scientist-in-training at the Centre for Research in Women’s Health. She has an MSc in Clinical Epidemiology, and completed her thesis work in diabetes and schizophrenia. Her current research focuses on the endocrine consequences related to breast cancer survivorship, specifically relating to bone health. She has a clinical interest in primary ovarian insufficiency and osteoporosis.

 

Shoba Sujana Kumar, MD, FRCPC is a Clinical Associate at WCH, with an MSc in Community Health and medical education.  In 2009, she was a Women’s Health Fellow and recipient of the F.M. Hill Humanitarian Award at WCH.  She is an active teacher in undergraduate and postgraduate education and the coordinator of Lunch and Learn inter-professional rounds at WCH. Her clinical interests include diabetes, diabetes and pregnancy, PCOS and thyroid cancer. She is director of the OB/Endocrine clinic at WCH effective March 2010 and continues to work in General Internal Medicine in the Clinical Decision Unit. Her other interests include development of the PCOS database and exploring differences in PCOS and diabetes related to ethnicity.
